ATTLEBORO — A man suffered life-threatening injuries and a woman sustained minor injuries after a two-car crash early this morning on Interstate 95 that temporarily shut down the northbound side of the highway,
According to a statement from Attleboro’s Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance, on Sunday, Sept. 7, at approximately 1:17 a.m., Attleboro firefighters were dispatched to Interstate 95 north after receiving a report of a crash. Upon arrival, crews encountered a debris field spanning nearly a quarter mile and found two heavily damaged vehicles.
One of the vehicles contained a male driver who was trapped inside. Firefighters used extrication tools to free him from the wreckage, and he was transported in critical condition by an advanced life support ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.

The second vehicle had rolled over and struck a bridge support before catching fire beneath the overpass. Firefighters extinguished the flames. The female driver had self-extricated before crews arrived and was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The highway was closed until approximately 5 a.m., while Massachusetts State Police conducted their investigation. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation was also called to the scene to inspect the bridge for potential damage but later cleared it for continued use.
District Chief Mark Renker noted that several bystanders tried to assist before emergency personnel arrived, creating initial confusion.
“With so many people present, the first few moments required careful coordination to determine who was injured and who was assisting,” Renker said.
The crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
