Driver using crutches arrested in Rutland for operating with suspended license

RUTLAND โ€” On Monday, July 21, 2025, at approximately 2:25 p.m., Officer Brian Fleury of the Rutland Police Department was sitting stationary in his cruiser on Maple Avenue near the post office monitoring traffic.

โ€œDuring this time, I observed a white Jeep Compass MA [# redacted] travel past me in the northbound lane,โ€ Officer Fleury said. โ€œA check on my MDT [mobile data terminal] showed that this vehicle had no valid inspection sticker.โ€

Officer Fluery stopped the vehicle on Pommogussett Road, in the area of the Highway Department.

โ€œI approached the vehicle and identified the operator as Mr. Matthew Hanson,โ€ Officer Fleury said. โ€œI also identified the passenger as the registered owner [name redacted] (Mr. Hansenโ€™s fiancรฉ).โ€

According to police, Matthew G. Hansen, 38, is a resident of Lee Street in Athol, MA.

โ€œMr. Hansen advised me that he does not have a valid license and that it was suspended for a past OUI,โ€ Officer Fleury said. โ€œMr. Hansen stated he was operating the vehicle due to [his fiancรฉ] not feeling well. Detective [Cassie] DeSousa arrived on scene to assist.โ€

At this time, Officer Fleury advised Hansen that he would be placing him under arrest.

โ€œMr. Hansen stepped out from the vehicle utilizing his crutches due to a back injury,โ€ Officer Fleury said. โ€œMr. Hansen was searched and handcuffs were placed in front due to injury. Mr. Hansen was transported back to the station to begin the booking process. Mr. Hansen was booked and afforded all applicable rights per MGL [Massachusetts General Law].โ€

Officer Fleury said Hansenโ€™s fiancรฉ took possession of the vehicle because she had a valid driverโ€™s license.

โ€œAn operating after suspension form was filed with the RMV,โ€ Officer Fleury said. โ€œMr. Hansen was placed in a secure cell to await contacting bail. Bail Commissioner Haapakoski was contacted and bail was set at personal recognizance.โ€

Matthew Hansen was issued a criminal citation for the following offenses:

  • Operating after Suspension for OUI
  • Inspection Sticker Violation

Hansenโ€™s arraignment was scheduled for July 22, 2025, in East Brookfield District Court.
