Two injured in house fire on East Street in Attleboro

ATTLEBORO — On Sunday, September 14, at approximately 1:49 p.m., Attleboro firefighters were dispatched to 57 East Street following a report of a structure fire.

According to a statement from Attleboro’s Fire Chief Scott LaChance, when crews arrived on scene, they observed smoke coming from the first-floor of the residence.

“Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and quickly knocked down the flames,” Chief LaChance said. “The fire was contained to the first-floor living room. However, smoke damage was present throughout the building.”

A male resident of the first-floor apartment sustained burns to his head and face, as well as smoke inhalation. He was transported by advanced life support ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.

A female good Samaritan who helped the resident escape the home was also injured and transported by advanced life support ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

The American Red Cross provided temporary housing assistance to displaced residents. Firefighters remained on scene for overhaul and safety operations until approximately 3:20 p.m.

“The quick actions of our firefighters prevented this fire from spreading beyond the living room and causing more extensive damage,” District Chief Mark Renker said. “We also want to recognize the efforts of a neighbor who tried to help, and wish both individuals a full recovery.”

Fire departments from Seekonk, Norton, and North Attleboro provided station coverage during the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
