ATTLEBORO — On Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to 23 Dean Street following a report of a building fire.
According to the Attleboro Fire Department, when firefighters arrived on scene they found smoke coming from the second floor of the eight-unit apartment building. An automatic sprinkler system had activated inside the apartment where the fire began, containing the flames until crews arrived and extinguished the remaining fire.
Although the fire was confined to the apartment where it originated, smoke and water damaged other areas of the building.
“This incident is a perfect example of why properly maintained fire protection systems are so important,” District Chief Scott Godin said. “The sprinkler system activated as designed and kept the fire confined to a single apartment, significantly reducing the amount of damage and preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.”
All residents were temporarily displaced while the building’s owner arranged alternative housing.
The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
National Grid also responded to disconnect electrical service to the building, the Attleboro Fire Department reported.
No residents or firefighters were injured.
Fire crews remained at the scene until approximately 3:35 p.m.
