BOLTON — Bolton officials announced today that Police Chief Luke Hamburger died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 5.
In a statement posted to the town’s official Facebook page, Bolton Town Hall, Chief Hamburger was described as a leader who “served our community with dedication, professionalism, and integrity” for the past two decades.
“As a leader, he combined warmth with strength, and his commitment to community policing and public safety made our town a better place,” the statement read. “He was a lovely person whose presence brought out the best in those around him.”

Town officials extended condolences to Hamburger’s family, friends, and colleagues, adding that details regarding services and memorial arrangements will be shared when available. The town also ordered municipal flags lowered to half-staff on Monday afternoon.
Neighboring agencies posted condolences through the day. Messages came from Dudley police, Shirley police, Boylston police, Sturbridge police and Fitchburg State University Police, among others.
Hamburger had served the Bolton Police Department for roughly two decades and was appointed chief in 2024, following a long tenure that included roles as reserve officer, lieutenant and sergeant.
No further information about the cause of death had been released as of this evening.
