Driver issued citation after failing to stop for Hingham school bus while using driver-assist feature

HINGHAM — A driver on Lincoln Street (Route 3A) was issued a citation after dash cam footage captured their vehicle failing to stop for a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop sign.

In a statement posted to social media, the Hingham Police Department reminded motorists that even vehicles equipped with driver-assistance or self-driving features still require the operator’s full attention.

“Reminder, even if a car has a driver assistance feature or self-driving option, the driver must still pay attention to what is happening on the road,” the department said. “The driver is always responsible for their vehicle’s safe operation.”

Police said the motorist told officers he was using an automated driving feature at the time of the incident. Despite that claim, the driver was issued a citation for failing to stop for the school bus.
