HINGHAM — On Thursday, July 23, 2026, at approximately 4:22 p.m., Hingham police officers responded to the Hingham Public Library parking lot at 66 Leavitt Street following a report of gunfire during a road rage incident involving the occupants of a car and a truck.
According to the Hingham Police Department, the truck left before officers arrived, while the car remained on scene. Police determined that a male passenger in the car had fired a gun in the library’s parking lot during the incident.
The passenger sustained an apparent injury unrelated to the gunfire and was transported to a hospital. Police recovered the firearm at the scene and determined that he was licensed to carry it. The car’s female driver was not injured.
The driver of the truck — who was also uninjured — later contacted police.
According to the Hingham Police Department, the incident began several miles from the library when the car’s driver allegedly threw a napkin out the window. The truck driver then followed the car until both vehicles entered the library’s parking lot.
The woman who was driving the car and the male truck driver then both exited their vehicles, approached each other, and engaged in a “heated verbal argument,” Hingham police reported.
“The passenger in the car fired two shots from inside the car,” the Hingham Police Department said in a statement. “Those shots were allegedly fired as the driver was walking back to his truck.”
The passenger, Steven A. License, 60, of Hingham, was arrested by Hingham police detectives in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth and charged with the following:
- Assault to Murder
- Attempt to Commit Assault & Battery by Discharge of a Firearm (two counts)
- Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Firearm)
- Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
- Disorderly Conduct
License was expected to be arraigned in the hospital on July 24, Hingham police said.
