FITCHBURG — McKay Elementary School was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a pipe leak was discovered in the building’s basement, according to a message shared by Fitchburg Public Schools.
“All students and staff are safe and we are coordinating with the Fitchburg State University facilities team to resolve the issue,” the district said in a statement.

Since the incident occurred near dismissal time, school officials said regular dismissal procedures remained in effect. However, all after-school programs scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 15, were canceled at McKay Elementary School only.
The district did not indicate when the leak would be fully repaired or whether it would affect Thursday’s school schedule.
