FITCHBURG — At least 15 people were displaced following a fire that took place at an apartment building on Day Street Sunday morning.
On Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, at approximately 5:18 a.m., fire crews from the Fitchburg Fire Department were dispatched to the four story apartment building located at 35 Day Street, which is known as “Hotel Raymond.” When crews arrived on scene, they saw flames coming from a fourth floor window in the rear of the building.
“First arriving crews reported visible flames showing from an upper-level apartment window in the rear of the building,” the Fitchburg Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “Crews quickly established a water supply, connected to the standpipe system of the building, and extinguished the fire. Extensive overhaul was conducted to ensure no further extension. The incident went to a 3rd alarm.”

According to Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia, who also posted about the fire on Facebook, the Fitchburg Fire Department contained the fire to the fourth floor of the building by 7 a.m.
Mayor Squailia added that the city’s building inspector was on scene to assist with building component and structural review and the city’s building department electrical inspector was also on scene to assist with the building’s fire alarm system.
In her post Squailia added, “Don’t have renter’s insurance? Premiums average $15-30/month and cover your personal belongings, liability and can cover temporary living expenses. Read more about this absolute must-have insurance for renters: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/renters-insurance.”
About 15 people from four units in the building were displaced by the fire.
The Salvation Army Fitchburg and the American Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced individuals, who will be temporarily housed in vacant apartments located on the Cherry Street side of the same building.
