FITCHBURG — Mayor Sam Squailia confirmed this week that the popular restaurant chain Tavern in the Square will open a new location at 170 Whalon Street, the site of the former Singapore Restaurant. The restaurant is expected to open in 2026.
Plans for the site include a full redesign by Sousa Design Architects of Brookline, Massachusetts, featuring indoor and outdoor dining for more than 150 guests. The project will also include a large central bar, a spacious outdoor patio with raised planters, and an upgraded energy-efficient kitchen.
“This will be a major win for Fitchburg’s dining scene and another exciting step forward for growth along Whalon Street,” Squailia said in a statement. Later adding, “Welcome, Tavern in the Square…we can’t wait to pull up a chair in 2026!”
According to the mayor, discussions are also ongoing with the owners of the nearby Kmart building, who indicated that updates on future development may be announced soon.
