Firefighters contain Ayer apartment fire to single unit on Groton School Road

AYER — At approximately 3:47 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2025, the Ayer police and firefighters were dispatched to 37 Groton School Road following reports of alarms going off and smoke coming from the first-floor windows of the building.

According to a statement from the Ayer Fire Department, upon arrival, the chief struck a first alarm assignment, bringing Ayer’s Engine 2, Engine 4, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Ambulance 2 to the scene, along with mutual aid engines from Devens and Groton. Shirley firefighters provided station coverage.

“One [hose] line was stretched and quickly contained the fire to the apartment of origin,” the Ayer Fire Department said in its statement. “The building owner is working with the displaced occupants to secure alternative housing for the night.”

All units cleared the scene by 5:41 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ayer Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
