Police investigating after man dies in early morning crash in Charlton

CHARLTON — At approximately 4:15 a.m. this morning, the Charlton Police Department received several calls reporting a motor vehicle crash on Southbridge Road (Route 169), near the Southbridge town line.

According to a statement from the Charlton Police Department, Charlton police and firefighters responded to the scene, where they were met with the aftermath of a single-vehicle crash involving only a male driver.

Charlton police said the preliminary investigation indicates that the involved vehicle, a 2012 Honda Fit, was traveling north on Southbridge Road (Route 169) when it veered off the roadway and struck a stone wall.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported by Charlton Fire Department ambulance to UMass-Harrington Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Charlton Police Department, along with the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, continue to investigate the incident.

The scene was cleared at approximately 8:15 a.m.

The identity of the man who passed away in the crash has not yet been released.

The Charlton Police Department directed further inquiries to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
