Fitchburg schools confirm buses will run after First Student, Teamsters reach agreement

FITCHBURG — Fitchburg Public Schools reported that student bus service will operate normally on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, after First Student and Teamsters Union Local 170 reached an agreement, averting a potential strike.

The announcement, which was posted on the district’s website, stated, “First Student and the Teamsters have reached an agreement; there will be no disruption to service and buses will run normally on Monday, December 1, 2025.”

Earlier this week, school officials warned families that a possible labor action by Teamsters Union Local 170, which represents First Student bus drivers and monitors, could disrupt the majority of yellow bus transportation beginning Monday.

At that time, Superintendent Jonathan Thompson said the district was not involved in the negotiations and did not have the ability to influence the process.

“If the strike moves forward as indicated, all yellow bus transportation provided by First Student will be unavailable beginning Monday, December 1,” Thompson said in a previous statement, urging families to plan for alternative transportation in the event of a disruption.

The potential strike would have affected most district routes. However, Van Pool/NRT transportation and Ride Rite services for students requiring specialized or van transportation were not expected to be impacted, as those providers are not part of Teamsters Local 170.

With an agreement now in place, district officials said no changes to regular bus schedules are expected for Monday, and students who rely on district-provided transportation should plan to attend school as usual.
