“I would note, the Barre Police Department has responded to the address of XXX Hubbardston Road, where the reporting party [name redacted], currently resides and his brother, John Vassar, previously resided. I am aware that [the reporting party] has an active abuse prevention order against John.”

According to police, John A. Vassar, 28, is a resident of Leicester, MA.

“The order states that John shall not abuse [the reporting party, i.e. his brother], remain at least 100 yards away from him, and stay away from his workplace,” Sgt. Chick said. “A modification to this order, amended on April 17, 2025, states that parties can communicate via email or through electronic means about their shared home only. I would note [the reporting party] and John are equal part owners on the property located at XXX Hubbardston Road.”

Sergeant Chick reported that, while speaking with [the reporting party], he stated that Vassar had sent him and his younger brother, letters sent via certified mail regarding their shared residence.

Sergeant Chick said the letter to the reporting party’s younger brother dated Sept. 19, 2025, was titled “Notice to Quit/Revocation of License to Occupy.”

“Toward the bottom of the letter it reads, ‘I hereby certify that on the 20th day of September 2025, I served this notice upon [the reporting party’s younger brother] by the following method:’ There are several methods listed below with one checked off: ‘Mailing by certified mail, return receipt requested,’” Sgt. Chick said. “The letter sent to [the reporting party] was titled, ‘Demand for Accounting of Rental Income.’ The letter is addressed to [the reporting party] at the top and concludes with ‘John Vassar’ printed and signed on the bottom of the page. This document does not include a date, but [the reporting party] stated that the letters were received on the same date. [The reporting party] stated that [his younger brother] initially thought that the letter was his and opened it. Once he realized it was for [the reporting party], he contacted [the reporting party] to advise him.”

Sergeant Chick said the reporting party provided him with a typed document which he had been using to keep track of events related to the case.

“Due to failed deliveries documented in the statement provided by [the reporting party], he stated that he became aware of the certified letter sent by John on October 13, 2025,” Sgt. Chick said.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, Sergeant Chick stated that he believed there was probable cause to charge John Vassar with one count of violating an abuse prevention order. A court summons was mailed to Vassar for the charge.

Vassar’s arraignment in East Brookfield District Court, originally scheduled for Oct. 23, 2025, was rescheduled to Jan. 14, 2026, due to their being “no judge” available that day, according to the criminal docket for the incident.

Disclaimer: If you are wondering why the arrest in this story took place in October, that’s because I had to file FOIA request(s) to obtain the court documents. FOIAs are time-consuming.
