WEBSTER — A suspicious package left inside the Webster Post Office this morning prompted a multi-agency response, temporary road closures, and precautionary office shutdowns before authorities determined it posed no threat.
According to the Webster Police Department, employees at the Webster Post Office contacted the South Worcester County Communications Center at approximately 4:48 a.m. on Jan. 9, 2026, after discovering a suspicious package left on a counter in the lobby.
Webster police and fire responded to the scene and determined the package warranted further investigation. Webster Emergency Medical Services was dispatched to stage in the area as a precaution, and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit Bomb Squad was requested and responded to the scene to assist as well.
The Webster Police Department said that “in an abundance of caution,” a section of Main Street in front of the post office and Town Hall was closed to traffic, with vehicles rerouted from the area. Town and library offices were closed, and school bus companies were notified to adjust their routes accordingly.
“Upon the arrival of State Police Bomb Squad members, an investigation commenced and it was quickly determined that the suspicious package posed no threat,” the Webster Police Department said in its statement.
Main Street was reopened after emergency crews cleared the scene, approximately three hours after the initial call for service.
