WINTHROP — On Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Winthrop firefighters were dispatched to 51 Somerset Avenue following a report of a fire.
According to Winthrop Fire Chief Stephen Calandra, when crews arrived on scene, they found a single-family home fully engulfed in flames.
The five occupants of the residence had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival.
Chief Calandra said the blaze escalated to a third alarm and took about three and a half hours to extinguish amid the snowstorm, with support from mutual aid partners including Massport and the fire departments in Chelsea, Everett, Revere, and Boston. Firefighters also had to dig out several snow-covered hydrants to supply hose lines.
“These were extremely challenging conditions, and I am grateful for the work of our crews and mutual aid partners in handling the incident while making sure everyone was safe and protected,” Chief Calandra said. “This was our second multi-alarm fire in three days, and we are grateful to have our mutual aid help take some of the burden off of our crews, especially in windy and snowy conditions that can be harmful in prolonged exposure.”
No injuries were reported.
