Maynard man arrested after alleged domestic assault, firearm threats at apartment complex

MAYNARD — On Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, at approximately 4:39 p.m., Maynard police responded to a report of a domestic assault involving a firearm at a multi-unit apartment complex on Dawn Road.

According to Maynard Police Chief Christopher Troiano, police were dispatched after a 911 caller reported that a 48-year-old man had allegedly assaulted a family member, attempted to strangle her, and later threatened her with a handgun.

Chief Troiano said that when police arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as Abdallah Halig, initially refused to exit the residence. Officers established a perimeter and safely detained Halig after a short standoff during which police issued repeated verbal commands. Halig eventually exited the apartment and was taken into custody without injury to officers or bystanders.

A preliminary investigation determined that Halig attempted to strangle and suffocate his female relative and later threatened her and other occupants of the apartment complex where he lived with a handgun.

Following interviews with the victim and witnesses, police also learned Halig had allegedly threatened to kill household members and himself if police were contacted.

Police later obtained and executed a search warrant at Halig’s apartment. Chief Troiano said officers recovered an unsecured, loaded Taurus 9mm handgun from Halig’s bedroom during the search.

Abdallah Halig, 48, of Maynard, was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault to murder a person age 60 or older with a firearm
  • Possession of a large capacity firearm (felony)
  • Possession of a large capacity feeding device
  • Strangulation or suffocation
  • Assault and battery on a person 60 or older or a disabled person
  • Intimidation of a witness (two counts)
  • Possession of a firearm without a license
  • Possession of ammunition without FID card
  • Possession of a firearm in a home or business
  • Improper storage of a large capacity firearm

Halig was arraigned in Concord District Court on Thursday and is being held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday, police said.

“This incident underscores the professionalism, restraint and high level of training demonstrated by our officers,” Chief Troiano said. “Faced with a volatile and potentially dangerous situation, officers relied on communication and de-escalation techniques to bring the situation to a safe resolution. Their actions prioritized the safety of the victim, nearby residents and the suspect, and reflect the standards we expect and continually train for at the Maynard Police Department.”
