Fire damages commercial building on Wachusett Street in Holden

HOLDEN — On Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at approximately 2:58 p.m., Holden firefighters responded to a report of smoke and fire coming from a commercial building located at 789 Wachusett Street.

According to the Holden Fire Department, the first engine to arrive on scene confirmed smoke conditions inside the building.

A working fire was struck, bringing in mutual aid from several surrounding communities. First-arriving crews extinguished the fire quickly, keeping damage limited to the interior wall separating two units and the attic space above, officials said.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Holden firefighters were assisted at the scene by crews from Rutland, West Boylston, Paxton and Sterling, along with the Holden Municipal Light Department and the Holden Police Department. Boylston, Leicester, Spencer and Worcester departments provided town-wide coverage during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Massachusetts Fire District 8 Fire Investigation Unit and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
