COHASSET — A 16-year-old from Scituate was arrested late Saturday night after police say he crashed a stolen vehicle while driving over 100 miles per hour on Route 3A in Cohasset.
According to the Cohasset Police Department, officers were alerted just before 11 p.m. on Feb. 7, 2026, that a 2014 Toyota RAV4 had just been reported stolen in Scituate by the Scituate Police Department.
Shortly after receiving the broadcast, Officer Kevin Lynch observed the vehicle traveling northbound on Chief Justice Cushing Highway (Route 3A) near Shaw’s Plaza. Police said the RAV4 was traveling 104 miles per hour in a posted 35 mile per hour zone.
When the driver saw the marked cruiser on the side of the road, he lost control of the vehicle in slippery winter conditions, according to police. The vehicle fishtailed, left the roadway, spun out, went airborne, struck a tree and came to rest in a large snowbank in front of Shaw’s. The vehicle was totaled in the crash.
Officers found the juvenile operator trapped inside the vehicle and immediately rendered first aid while securing the scene. He was then transported by ambulance to South Shore Hospital for further medical evaluation.
According to the Cohasset Police Department, since the vehicle was allegedly stolen in Scituate, which is located in Plymouth County, and the crash occurred in Cohasset, in Norfolk County, the teen is now face charges in both counties.
“Driving 104 miles per hour through our community placed countless lives at risk,” Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said. “We are extremely fortunate that no innocent motorists, officers, or pedestrians were injured. The coordination between our officers and Scituate police ensured this dangerous situation was brought to an immediate end.”
