COHASSET — On Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, at approximately 12:23 a.m., Cohasset police received multiple 911 calls reporting that an MBTA Commuter Rail train had struck a vehicle at the North Main Street grade crossing.
According to the Cohasset Police Department, the Greenbush Line train was traveling toward Scituate when it struck a 2016 Toyota Camry that had become stuck on the railroad tracks.
Cohasset police officers and firefighter-paramedics responded to the scene and found the heavily damaged Camry on the rail bed. The commuter train came to a stop just short of the Cohasset MBTA Commuter Rail Station.
According to a preliminary investigation, the Camry was being driven by a 33-year-old Mansfield man who was delivering packages for an online delivery service when he apparently made a wrong turn onto the railroad tracks and got stuck.
As the train approached, the driver recognized the danger, exited the vehicle and moved to safety before the collision, the Cohasset Police Department said. He was not injured.
Approximately 15 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported among the passengers or train crew.
The Camry was totaled in the crash, police said.
The crash shut down North Main Street for more than two hours as Cohasset police and MBTA Transit Police investigated and crews cleared the damaged car and debris from the tracks.
“This could very easily have been a fatal incident,” Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said. “The driver made the critically important decision to get out of the vehicle and move away from the tracks rather than remain inside or attempt to free the car as the train approached. A vehicle can be replaced. A life cannot. We are extremely fortunate that no one was injured.”
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Cohasset Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and MBTA Transit Police.
