MILFORD — On Monday, March 2, 2026, at approximately 10:40 a.m., the Milford police and fire departments responded to Woodland Elementary School after a gas line connected to the building’s emergency generator was accidentally ruptured during snow removal operations.
According to Milford Public Schools Superintendent Craig Consigli, school officials ordered an evacuation as a precaution after the gas line was struck.
According to Superintendent Consigli, when Milford police and fire arrived on scene, they secured the building. Eversource Energy also responded to the scene to assess the situation.

“During the evacuation, students and staff were moved a safe distance from the building while first responders evaluated the scene,” Superintendent Consigli said in a statement. “School buses were brought to the campus to provide a warming location. Students and staff were out of the building for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.”
Superintendent Consigli said that after a thorough assessment, the Milford police and fire departments, as well as Eversource, determined the gas leak had been contained and the building was safe to reoccupy.
Students and staff returned to the school and normal operations resumed by noon, while Eversource crews remained on scene to complete repairs.
