Milford man arrested after attempted van theft, overnight break-ins reported

MILFORD — On Monday, April 27, 2026, at approximately 1:17 a.m., the Milford Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call from a resident reporting that her husband was confronting a man who was attempting to steal his van from their residence on Hayward Street.

According to the Milford Police Department, while officers were en route, the caller told a communications officer that the suspect had fled on foot onto East Main Street.

At approximately 1:26 a.m., officers located a man matching the caller’s description near the intersection of East Main and Plain streets.

Milford police said Cristian Romero, 24, of Milford, was arrested following an on-scene investigation.

In the hours after the arrest, multiple area residents came forward to report overnight larcenies and vehicle break-ins.

“Officers responded quickly as the report of the vehicle owner struggling with the suspect came into our communications center,” Milford Police Chief Robert Tusino said. “I’m thankful that our officers were able to safely capture the suspect before any more homes or vehicles were burglarized.”

Cristian Romero, 24, of Milford, was charged with the following:

  • Breaking & Entering Building Nighttime for Felony
  • Breaking & Entering Vehicle/Boat Nighttime for Felony (two counts)
  • Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
  • Disturbing the Peace

Romero’s arraignment was scheduled for Monday morning in Milford District Court.
