Westminster police fatally shoot armed man while serving arrest warrant

WESTMINSTER — On Monday, March 23, 2026, at approximately 4:42 p.m., officers with the Westminster Police Department responded to a residence on South Ashburnham Road to serve an arrest warrant on a 22-year-old resident.

According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., when police arrived on scene, they made contact with the individual inside the home. During the interaction, the man allegedly held a large knife and moved toward officers, who then discharged their department-issued firearms, striking him.

Officers immediately rendered medical aid at the scene. The man was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to a Worcester-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol pending the outcome of the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, along with the Westminster Police Department.
