President Trump said on Truth Social Monday that the United States is in “serious discussions” with “a new, and more reasonable,” regime to end military operations in Iran. He added that although “great progress has been made” if for any reason a deal isn’t reached and if the Strait of Hormuz isn’t immediately “open for business” then the U.S. will “conclude” it’s lovely stay in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all electric generating plants, oil wells, Kharg Island and possibly all desalinization plants.
The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, responded stating that Iran has held no “direct” talks with the United States but has received messages through mediators regarding the U.S.’s desire for negotiations, according to Iran’s state-run news organization Press TV.
During a press conference Monday, Baghaei said, “It seems quite natural that when the U.S. raises the issues of negotiations and diplomacy, sensitivities will be increased. It is not clear how much, even inside the U.S., the country’s claims about diplomacy and negotiations are seriously taken into account. Reactions and reflections also show that the extent of global trust in the U.S. claims in the field of diplomacy is very limited.”
Baghaei added that Iran has made its position on negotiations with the United States clear, while saying the U.S.’s 15-point plan contains “very excessive, unrealistic and irrational” demands.
Baghaei also said that while he appreciated neighboring countries’ concerns about peace and security in the region, the United States and Israel were the parties that started the war on Feb. 28, adding, “It is necessary to be realistic and fair and stop expecting only one side to exercise self-restraint.”
