SOMERVILLE — On Saturday, April 4, 2026, at approximately 6:05 p.m., Somerville Police Officer Robert Taylor was dispatched to 31A Day Street following a report of a breaking and entering.

Officer Taylor said Somerville Dispatch relayed that a neighbor who also resides at 31 Day Street reported observing his neighbor’s door had been forced open.
“He also reported that the resident’s vehicle was not present and that he could hear someone moving around inside the apartment,” Officer Taylor said.
Somerville Police Officers Patrick Canty, YvonJean-Jacques, and Sergeant Jason Costa responded as backup.
“While en route, dispatch advised that [the neighbor] observed an individual leaving the residence,” Officer Taylor said. “He provided a description of a male party believed to be of dark complexion, wearing a green jacket, carrying two gray backpacks, and walking down Day Street toward Davis Square. Officer Canty, who was in the area of Davis Square, identified an individual matching this description and stopped him at the Davis Square bus station on the College Avenue side.”
Officer Taylor said that he responded to the location with Sergeant Costa and Officer Jean-Jacques.
“The individual was later identified as Mr. Francisco Williams,” Officer Taylor said. “He was advised that he matched the description of a suspect reportedly involved in a breaking and entering on Day Street. At the time of the stop, he was wearing a green jacket, carrying two gray backpacks, and had a black mask around his neck.”
According to police, Francisco F. Williams, 63, is a resident of Medfield, MA.
Officer Taylor said he then responded to 31A Day Street, where he met with the neighbor who reported the incident and the resident, who had just returned home upon his arrival.
Officer Taylor said he asked the neighbor what he had observed. The neighbor stated that he heard movement inside the apartment and knew the resident was not home because her vehicle was not in the shared garage.
“He further stated that he looked outside and noticed that her door had been forced open, prompting him to call the police,” Officer Taylor said. “A short time later, he observed an individual leaving the residence and relayed the description to Somerville Dispatch.”
Officer Taylor said he then conducted a sweep of the residence to ensure no one was inside.
“It should be noted there was significant damage to the front door, the apartment appeared ransacked, with items scattered throughout the main and guest bedrooms, as well as the kitchen and living room,” Officer Taylor said. “After confirming the residence was clear, I escorted [the resident] inside so she could assess any missing property. She reported that numerous items of jewelry were missing.”
Sergeant Costa then asked the neighbor if he would be willing to participate in a show up identification and he agreed. (A “show-up” is a police procedure where a suspect is presented individually to a witness shortly after a crime has occurred to determine if they recognize the suspect as the person involved.)
“After completing the necessary paperwork, Sergeant Costa transported [the neighbor] to the bus station, where Mr. Williams was being detained by Officers Canty and Jean-Jacques,” Officer Taylor said. “[He] positively identified Mr. Williams as the individual he observed leaving the residence.”
Williams was then taken into custody.
“Prior to transport to the station for booking, a search incident to arrest was conducted of Mr. Williams’s person by Officers Canty and Jean-Jacques,” Officer Taylor said. “Inside his jacket and pants pockets were numerous items of jewelry.”
Officer Taylor and Sergeant Costa then transported the resident to the bus station to determine whether the jewelry belonged to her.
“She confirmed that multiple items found on Mr. Williams were her property,” Officer Taylor said. “The items were subsequently secured and returned to [her].”
