BARRE — On Thursday, April 9, 2026, at approximately 9:40 p.m., firefighters with the Barre Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the multi-family residential property located at 11 Oak Street after the Central Massachusetts Regional Emergency Communications Center received a report of the fire.
According to the Barre Fire Department, crews arrived to find a fire on the exterior rear porch of the building. Firefighters immediately began suppression efforts and quickly extinguished the flames.
Crews then conducted overhaul operations to ensure the fire had not spread into the structure. The building was ventilated and monitored using gas detection meters before being turned back over to the occupants. No occupants were displaced as a result of the incident.

In a statement, the Barre Fire Department said the cause of the fire was determined to be the “careless disposal of smoking materials.”
Multiple Barre Fire Department apparatus responded to the scene, including Engines 6, 5, 4, 1, Ladder 1, Ambulance 1, Squad 1, and Car 1. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Rutland and Oakham fire departments.
Earlier in the day, the Barre Fire Department also responded to several other incidents, including three medical calls, two small brush fires in town and one mutual aid brush fire in Hardwick.
