NEWBURY — On Thursday, April 30, 2026, at approximately 2:48 p.m., the Newbury Fire Department responded to 7 Lower Green following a report of a house fire.
According to Newbury Fire Chief David Evans, Newbury Engine 2 and Ladder 8 were the first units on scene and their crews stretched a hose line into the building. Newburyport Engine 5 later stretched a backup line from Engine 2 and entered the home to assist crews and check whether the fire had extended.
Newbury Tanker 2 also responded to the scene and provided a water supply because the home is located off the water system, Chief Evans said.
The fire was brought under control at approximately 3:45 p.m. and was contained to the back rooms of the house.
“The building, originally Seddon Tavern, traces its roots to the 18th century at a notable location,” Chief Evans said in a statement. “The building was renovated in the 1930s and moved to the Lower Green. The home is within the Lower Green Local Historical District being considered at Town Meeting on Monday.”
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Amesbury, Newburyport, Salisbury, Georgetown and Rowley fire departments, as well as Cataldo Ambulance. The Groveland, Ipswich and West Newbury fire departments provided station coverage.
National Grid also responded to assist with shutting off electricity to the home, Chief Evans said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Newbury police and fire departments.
