FRAMINGHAM — On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the Framingham Fire Department responded to a small fire at Framingham Recycling on Morton Street.
According to Framingham Fire Chief Michael Dutcher, the fire was quickly extinguished by members of Group 3, and no injuries were reported.
Chief Dutcher said the fire was caused by a grill with an electric igniter that made its way through the recycling system with live batteries still inside. The igniter continued clicking while in a debris pile and eventually ignited one of several flammable liquid or gas sources present in the materials being processed.
“The incident serves as a reminder to residents to properly dispose of grills, batteries, and other potentially hazardous items, as improperly discarded materials can create dangerous conditions at recycling and waste facilities,” Chief Dutcher said.
Chief Dutcher added that Framingham Public Works will hold a household hazardous waste disposal day on Saturday, May 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Department of Public Works headquarters on Western Avenue.
