FITCHBURG — On Friday, June 5, 2026, at approximately 2:24 p.m., Fitchburg Fire Department crews were dispatched to the Bemis Road area following a report of a possible residential building fire.
In an email to News Link Live Friday evening, Assistant Fire Chief Patrick G. Haverty said the fire occurred at 52 Melrose Street, a two-family residence located in the Bemis Road area.
When the first crews arrived on scene, they reported a large amount of heavy fire showing from the front and side of the building.
Firefighters immediately deployed multiple attack line hoses, established a water supply, and accessed the roof using an aerial ladder.
The fire was quickly knocked down before crews conducted overhaul operations, according to the department.
The fire caused extensive damage to the main residence, as well as damage to siding on an adjacent exposure.
The incident was upgraded to a working fire.
No injuries were reported.
Six residents were displaced.
Assistant Chief Haverty said that, as of 6:23 p.m. Friday, crews were still on scene conducting the investigation.
