Worcester man charged with fentanyl trafficking after police pursuit ends with crash into bridge

WORCESTER — On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at approximately 2:20 a.m., a Worcester police officer observed a vehicle speeding down Main Street.

According to the Worcester Police Department, the officer activated his flashing lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated to approximately 70 mph before striking a tree and crashing into a bridge at the bottom of a hill on Hammond Street.

The driver ran from police and attempted to jump a fence before they caught up with him, the Worcester Police Department reported.

The driver was identified as Luis Saldana, 42, of Worcester.

Police found a baggie of suspected crack cocaine before Saldana was taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to the Worcester Police Department, police later located live ammunition on the driver’s side floorboard next to an open fanny pack. Police said fentanyl was found inside the fanny pack.

Saldana did not have a license to carry or an FID card, and his driver’s license was suspended, the Worcester Police Department reported.

Saldana was charged with possession of a Class B substance, trafficking fentanyl over 10 grams, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and several driving-related offenses.
