MassWildlife is inviting residents to explore some of Massachusetts’ most distinctive natural habitats during a series of guided walks planned across the state this fall.
Habitat biologists will lead participants through biodiversity hotspots while discussing invasive species, rare wildlife and ongoing projects designed to restore native ecosystems.
The first walk, “Infestation to Restoration: Managing for Invasive Species,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Herman Covey Wildlife Management Area in Belchertown.
Participants will learn how to identify spotted lanternflies, trees of heaven and other invasive species while exploring how MassWildlife restores native habitats. The event includes an approximately 1.5-mile walk over uneven terrain. Registration is available online.
The second walk, “Barrens and Buck Moths, Carver/Plymouth,” is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Myles Standish Complex.
MassWildlife and Department of Conservation and Recreation staff will discuss buck moths and other wildlife species that depend on pine barrens with open tree canopies maintained through fire or other disturbances. Participants should prepare for an approximately 1.5-mile walk over uneven ground. Registration is available online.
The third walk, “Restoring Woodlands for Wildlife, East Falmouth” will take place from noon to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Frances Crane Wildlife Management Area.
The management area supports more than 20 wildlife species classified as endangered, threatened or of special concern. Biologists will discuss more than a decade of habitat restoration at the site and management activities planned for the winter. The walk will cover approximately 2.5 miles of uneven terrain. Space is limited, and advance registration is required for each walk.
