Family displaced following kitchen fire in multifamily residence in Gloucester

GLOUCESTER — On Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, at approximately 6:20 p.m., firefighters with the Gloucester Fire Department responded to 50 Mt. Vernon Street following multiple reports of a structure fire.

According to the Gloucester Fire Department, when firefighters arrived on scene, they observed fire showing from a second floor window of the 3 1/2 story multifamily home. Crews conducted an interior attack and search, quickly knocking down the fire.

All of the residents had safely evacuated or were away at the time of the fire, the Gloucester Fire Department said. During the search, firefighters located and rescued a cat.

The fire originated in a kitchen on the second floor and appears to be accidental in nature, the Gloucester Fire Department reported.

The family whose apartment was damaged was displaced, while the remaining three families were expected to be able to return to their apartments by Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the Gloucester Fire Department.

All residents declined assistance from the American Red Cross.

No civilians injuries were reported, while one firefighter was being evaluated at the time of the department’s report.
