OXFORD – On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m., Officer Daniel Karle of the Oxford Police Department served an abuse prevention order to a 55-year-old Oxford man.

Officer Karle said the plaintiff named in the order resides with the man, who was identified as 55-year-old James Wells.
“The stipulations of the order were read to Wells and he acknowledged he understood them,” Officer Karle said. “Following the service of the order, I arranged with [the plaintiff] for Wells to pick up property at the residence at 8:15 p.m., in my presence.”
Officer Karle said he spoke with Wells over a recorded telephone line at approximately 6:50 p.m. and instructed him to meet at the corner of Harwood Street and Old Webster Road, after which they would go retrieve Wells’ property.
At approximately 7:40 p.m., Officer Karle, Sergeant Ryan Kasik, and Officer Lee Murphy were dispatched to the plaintiff’s residence following a report of a violation of the 209A Abuse Prevention Order.
“[The plaintiff] was reporting that Wells was on the property and appeared to be intoxicated,” Officer Karle said. “While en route to the residence, officers were advised by dispatch that Wells had fled into the woods.”
Officer Karle said that when he arrived on scene, he met with the plaintiff in the driveway of the residence.
“She was frantic and stated that Wells had left the residence travelling southbound on a bicycle wearing a camouflage hat and a blue shirt,” Officer Karle said. “A short time later, Wells was apprehended near the intersection of Harwood Street and Old Webster Road wearing said clothing.”
Officer Karle said Wells was advised he was being detained, was then handcuffed and then placed in the rear of a cruiser.
“Officer Murphy responded to the residence to speak with [the plaintiff],” Officer Karle said. “She confirmed that when she went out to the back entrance of the residence, she encountered Wells roughly three feet off the back door. [The plaintiff] asked Wells what he was doing there and advised him that a 209A Protection Order was in place. Wells stated that he was getting his bicycle. [The plaintiff] advised Wells that she was calling the police, to which Wells responded, ‘They are going to kill me.’”
Officer Karle said that after confirming with the plaintiff that Wells was on the property, and that he made contact with her, Wells was advised that he was under arrest for violating the abuse prevention order. The stipulations of the abuse prevention order Wells allegedly violated were the second stipulation, which required Wells to “not contact the plaintiff” and stipulation three, which required him to “leave and stay away from the plaintiff’s residence.”
James D. Wells, 55, of Oxford, was charged with the following:

“Wells was read his Miranda rights and later transported to the Oxford Police Department where he went through a normal booking and bail process,” Officer Karle said. “No bail was set. Upon rereading the stipulations of the order to Wells, and giving him a written copy, he did acknowledge that he violated Stipulations 2 and 3 of the order.”
Wells was arraigned in Dudley District Court on Aug. 26, 2026. Following his arraignment, Wells was released on $500 cash bail under the condition that he stay away from/not contact the victim and that he abide by the restraining order.
Wells’ next court date is a pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 23, 2026.
