ASHBURNHAM — On Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, at approximately 8:01 p.m., the Ashburnham Fire Department responded to 104 Ashby Road following a 911 call reporting a fire in the wall of a residence.
According to Ashburnham Fire Chief Corey Leary, the first fire crews to arrive on scene encountered heavy smoke and confirmed an active structure fire. A single occupant was inside the residence when the fire broke out and was assisted outside by firefighters.
“Due to the fire conditions and resources needed to bring the incident under control, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing additional mutual aid companies to the scene,” Chief Leary said.
The Ashburnham Police Department responded to assist with scene safety and security, while Ashburnham Municipal Light Plant personnel disconnected electrical power to the residence to support safe firefighting operations.
The home sustained extensive fire and smoke damage.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Westminster, Winchendon, Ashby, Rindge, Townsend and Fitchburg, as well as Wood’s Ambulance. The Hubbardston Fire Department provided station coverage in Ashburnham while crews operated at the scene.
Chief Leary said members of the District 8 Fire Investigation Unit responded to assist with the investigation into the fire’s origin and cause.
The fire remains under investigation.
