BOLTON — On Friday, May 27, Bryan Dufresne of the Bolton Police Department was monitoring traffic on Main Street at around 8:59 a.m. when he performed a random RMV query of a Jeep Wrangler with Massachusetts plates.
According to Officer Dufresne’s Statement of Facts in Support of Application for Criminal Complaint submitted to the Clinton District Court, after performing the RMV query, he discovered that the registered owner of the Jeep was Steven Savoie, 52, of Pondside Street in Bolton, who had an active felony warrant out of Marlborough District Court.
“I also found after performing my RMV query that the vehicle’s inspection status was expired,” wrote Officer Dufresne in his Statement of Facts. Later adding, “I conducted a motor vehicle stop and advised the operator that he was being audio and video recorded. I immediately recognized the operator as Mr. Savoie from previous interactions with him. I advised him I was stopping him for his inspection status and positively identified him by his Massachusetts license as Steven Savoie. I then returned to my cruiser and confirmed with dispatch that the warrant was still active and then requested Officer [Gurpreet] Singh respond to my location.”
Once Officer Singh arrived on scene, Officer Dufresne asked Savoie to “step toward the rear of his vehicle.”
“While at the rear of the vehicle and attempting to handcuff him, he was pressing the back of his right hand into his left palm in a manner not allowing me to handcuff his left wrist once I had his right wrist cuffed,” wrote Officer Dufresne in his Statement of Facts.
“At this time, he began violently resisting arrest and attempting to pull away from Officer Singh and I. At this same time, he also began striking his head against the roll cage of the Jeep that was exposed with the top off.”
Officer Dufresne added that Savoie then swung his right leg out behind him striking the front of his right leg.
Once the officers handcuffed Savoie, they continued to attempt to gain control of him, eventually bringing him to the side of roadway by Officer Dufresne’s cruiser.
“During the altercation, Officer Singh and I placed Mr. Savoie up against the rear passenger side of my cruiser in an attempt to gain control. At this time, Mr. Savoie began striking his head so violently against my cruiser that he left a dent on my passenger side above the rear trunk window.”
Officer Dufresne and Savoie managed to largely control Savoie by bringing him down to the ground. According to Officer Dufresne’s Statement of Facts, Savoie continued to fight with the officers on the ground.
Officer Dufresne called for backup. The additional officers “assisted in gaining control” of Savoie until EMS arrived on scene to transport Savoie under a Section 12 for a mental health evaluation. According to Dufresne’s Statement of Facts, Savoie was sent for a mental health evaluation because he said he wanted to kill himself during “the altercation.”
Savoie was charged with No Inspection Sticker, Wanton Destruction of Property +$1,200, Resisting Arrest, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer.
Savoie was also taken in on a default warrant out of Marlborough District Court.
He was arraigned in Clinton District Court.
