FITCHBURG — Police are investigating a fatal car accident that claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian Friday night.

According to a press release from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, at about 8:45 p.m., a 76-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while on a crosswalk at the intersection of Water and Nichols Street, a four-way intersection.

“The four-way intersection is where the cities of Leominster and Fitchburg meet. Police from both communities responded to the scene. It was determined the victim was struck in Fitchburg,” wrote Scott Croetau, the deputy communications director for the Worcester DA’s office.

The victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead. His name will not be released until his next of kin are notified.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained on scene following the crash.

The crash is currently being investigated by Fitchburg police, Leominster police, State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Team.
