Following a report of a fight in a campus parking lot at about 2:30 a.m., Worcester State University Police responded to the scene, where they found two individuals with gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to UMass Medical Center, where one was pronounced dead and the other emergency underwent surgery.

Early said none of those involved in the altercation were university students and the shooting does not appear to be random in nature.

An overnight shelter in place order was issued for the university from about 2:49 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday when officials deemed the university safe again.

“As far as this incident goes, from everything we can tell, the university is a safe campus right now,” Early said.

There was a significant police presence on campus throughout the day Saturday, as Worcester police, university police, and State Police detectives conducted an investigation of the campus, which included areas near Sheehan Hall and Wasylean Hall.

The names of the victims and the suspect have not yet been released.

The university has canceled homecoming and family weekend. Counseling services are also available to students, Acting President Lois Wims said.
