WORCESTER — A man suspected of killing a person on Heroult Road and later attempting to carjack motorists on I-190 northbound died by suicide during a standoff with police in Worcester this afternoon.
According to a statement from the Worcester Police Department, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at about 2:20 p.m., Worcester police officers were dispatched to an (undisclosed) address on Heroult Road following a report of a possible gunshot victim. When they arrived on scene, police located a seriously injured man who was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Shortly afterward, a Massachusetts State Trooper approached a man exhibiting suspicious behavior. The man brandished a firearm and fired a shot at the trooper. The man then fled the scene after the trooper told him to drop the weapon.
At approximately 3:24 p.m., Worcester police were dispatched to I-190 northbound, near Heroult Road, in response to a report of an armed man stopping traffic and pointing a firearm at motorists. Worcester police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers arrived at the scene and pursued the man on foot along the highway. During the pursuit, the man attempted to carjack several motorists.
In its statement, the Worcester Police Department said that “in response to the imminent threat posed by the male,” a Worcester police officer and a trooper discharged their firearms during the encounter. The suspect then shot himself. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced deceased.
“At this time, we believe that the man from the I-190 incident is the suspect from the Heroult Road incident. There is no current danger to the public,” the Worcester Police Department said in its statement.
