
WORCESTER — Police have identified Yubar Perez, 40, as the victim of a fatal shooting on Heroult Road, and Felix Rivera, 41, as the suspect who took his own life on Interstate 190 during a standoff with police.
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Worcester police were dispatched to 32 Heroult Road after receiving a report of a possible gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers found Perez with serious gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At approximately 3:24 p.m., Worcester police were dispatched to I-190 northbound, near the East Mountain Street interchange, in response to a report of an armed man stopping traffic and pointing a firearm at motorists.
Worcester police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers arrived at the scene and pursued the suspect, later identified as Rivera, on foot along the highway. During the chase, Rivera attempted to carjack several motorists.
In response to the imminent threat posed by Rivera, a Worcester police officer and a state trooper fired their weapons. Amid the ensuing standoff, Rivera shot himself. He was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Worcester police have confirmed that the two incidents are connected and that Rivera is believed to be responsible for the shooting of Perez.
