FITCHBURG — At about 8:00 a.m. this morning, a call came into the Fitchburg Police Department reporting that a MART bus had crashed into the building at the Intermodal Transportation Center, a bus station located at 100 Main Street.

According to Gary Fournier, a longtime photojournalist who was on scene, when firefighters arrived on scene, they reported that a man was trapped underneath the MART bus after it had crashed through the glass-plated facade of the bus station.

The man was reported to have serious traumatic injuries but he was conscious, Fournier said.

Fournier heard the reports in real time while listening to the police scanner.

“Firefighters had to use air bags to lift the buss off of the man so they could get him out from underneath the bus,” Fournier said.

Lifeflight was called to the scene to airlift the man to the hospital.
