ASHBY โ On Monday, Oct. 7, 2024, Officer Christopher Davis of the Ashby Police Department was conducting stationary traffic enforcement at the intersection of Greenville Road and Fitchburg State Road, both part of Route 31. At approximately 9:11 a.m., he noticed a vehicle heading south on Greenville Road make a left turn onto Fitchburg State Road.

โAs the vehicle passed my location, I observed a red โRโ inspection sticker,โ Officer Davis said.
Officer Davis conducted an RMV query of the vehicle’s plates. The RMV response indicated that the vehicle had failed an inspection on August 6, 2024.
“I pulled onto Fitchburg State Road, activated my emergency blue lights, and conducted the motor vehicle stop in the area of 245 Fitchburg State Road,” Officer Davis said. “I approached the vehicle, introduced myself, and explained the reason for the stop was for the failed inspection sticker. The operator, who I am familiar with as Calton Chakwizira from previous interactions, immediately showed he was upset over the failed inspection.โ
According to police, Calton Amos Chakwizira, 46, is a resident of 130 Wheeler Road, Ashby, MA.

โAs I began speaking to Chakwizira, I observed what appeared to be open containers on the passenger floor [of his vehicle],โ Officer Davis said. โI also am familiar with Chakwizira to have a suspended Massachusetts [license] status. I requested Chakwizira out of the vehicle and placed him into custody for suspended operation of a motor vehicle. I searched Chakwizira per department policy and placed him in the rear passenger side of my cruiser. I then conducted a search of the passenger side compartment on the floor of the open containers. The open containers were non-alcoholic Stella Artois beverages. I also observed on the passenger seat a SCRAM device that I am familiar with to be issued to individuals on probation for alcohol related offenses. Also in plain view, I observed several prescription bottles throughout the vehicle. I observed the name Michael Thomas on a bottle and when I picked it up it was for Dextroamphetamine (Adderall), a controlled Class B substance. I also found several other prescription bottles for Michael Thomas that were empty or not a controlled substance. I also found one prescription sleeve of Gabapentin in the name of Kenneth Zebek. I started the on-call tow.โ
At about 9:35 a.m., Officer Davis transported Chakwizira to the station for booking.
โChakwizira was read his Miranda Warnings, booked, and processed per department policy without incident,โ Officer Davis said. โThe Dextroamphetamine (Adderall) was placed into evidence. All other prescriptions that did not have Chakwiziraโs name on it were placed into property for safe keeping. RMV driver history shows Chakwizira has seven entries for suspended operation of a motor vehicle with one open charge from a pending OUI case on Sept. 8, 2024. BOP [Board of Probation] search shows Chakwizira is on probation until March 3, 2026.โ
Chakwizira was issued a Massachusetts Uniform Citation Arrest Citation for the following charges:
- Operation a Motor Vehicle Not Meeting RMV Safety Standards
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
- Possession of a Class B Drug
Chakwizira was arraigned in Ayer District Court on Oct. 7, 2024. Following his arraignment, he was released on his own personal recognizance.
On Nov. 11, 2024, he attended a pretrial conference hearing.
Chakwiziraโs next court appearance is a due process hearing scheduled for Jan. 8, 2025.
