FITCHBURG — The National Weather Service Boston Office’s seven day forecast for Fitchburg indicates that the rest of the work week will be largely sunny and in the 20s with low overnight temperatures and there’s the possibility of another snowstorm on Thursday.
This afternoon it is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 20 degrees, with wind chill values as low as zero. There’s a high wind warning in effect for the western and north-central parts of the state including the cities of Blanford, Barre, Ayer, Fitchburg, Chesterfield, and Charlemont, until 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.
Westerly winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour are expected with gusts of up to 55 mph.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office said in when announcing the high wind warning. “Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
The National Weather Service included the following precautionary/preparedness actions in the wind advisory:
“Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.”
The strong winds will start to diminish this evening and it is expected to be cold and “gutsy” Wednesday, but with much less wind. The temperature Wednesday is expected to reach a high of 25 degrees with wind child values as low as -5. On Thursday, there will be a high of 28 degrees. A coastal storm may brush the far southeast New England coast with some accumulating snow possible for the south coast, Cape Cod, and the islands from Thursday into Friday.
According to the National Weather Service’s weather discussion for the area, a surface low pressure system will be exiting the area Friday morning, and outside of some lingering snow showers across eastern Massachusetts, there will be a drying trend through this weekend. The temperature is expected to be in the 30s on Saturday and Sunday, with the high on Saturday being 33 degrees and the high on Sunday being 36 degrees.
