Intoxicated man arrested for disorderly conduct after blocking traffic, causing disturbance outside Orange liquor store

ORANGE โ€” On Friday, March 28, 2025, at approximately 4:19 p.m., Orange Police Officers Chris Bisceglia and Sydney Richardson responded to Highland Spirits, a liquor store located at 16 East Main Street, after a 911 caller reported that an intoxicated individual was blocking his vehicle and refusing to move.

โ€œ[The 911 caller] reported that the individual was yelling and making threats. The subject was described as a male wearing a sweatshirt and brown pants, accompanied by a dog,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. Later adding, โ€œThis particular area of East Main Street experiences steady pedestrian and vehicular traffic due to its proximity to numerous small businesses. Any disturbances or disorderly behavior in this location tend to immediately draw public attention, potentially causing alarm, concern, or inconvenience among residents, visitors, and local business patrons.โ€

Officer Bisceglia said that when he arrived on scene, he immediately heard a male yelling loudly.

โ€œAs I approached, I observed a male fitting the provided description yelling at an individual seated inside a parked blue GMC Terrain SUV bearing MA registration plate [# redacted],โ€ Officer Bisceglia said.  โ€œI approached the male and asked him what was happening. While speaking with him, I immediately noticed a strong odor consistent with an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, slurred speech, and glassy, bloodshot eyes. He was identified via Massachusetts identification as John Matesowicz.โ€

According to police, John J. Matesowicz, 46, is a resident of Prospect Street in Orange, MA.

โ€œ[The 911 caller] exited his vehicle and explained the details of the disturbance,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. โ€œHe stated John had been causing a disturbance inside Highland Spirits and was asked to leave by store employees. [The 911 caller] attempted to defuse the situation by offering John a ride if he agreed to leave the store, but once outside, John became belligerent. A Highland Spirits employee informed John he was not permitted to re-enter the store due to his disruptive behavior.โ€

Officer Bisceglia said he asked Matesowicz where he lived and offered him transportation to his residence if a sober adult could assume responsibility for him.

โ€œJohn refused to disclose his address and became argumentative,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. โ€œHe began loudly accusing me of intending to take away his service animal, urging bystanders to record the interaction. John’s increasingly aggressive behavior caused him to step dangerously close to moving traffic on East Main Street, prompting me to briefly halt vehicular traffic for his safety and to prevent an accident. John continued shouting obscenities and behaving erratically, repeatedly pulling aggressively on his dog’s leash, causing the dog’s collar to come loose and fall off. Despite multiple instructions, John refused to secure his dog. At one point, John walked directly into traffic, yelling at vehicles to stop and assist him.โ€

Officer Bisceglia said he handed Officer Richardson Matesowiczโ€™s identification and asked her to communicate with Matesowicz to further de-escalate the situation.

โ€œJohn briefly calmed down while speaking with Officer Richardson but soon resumed yelling and walked into the Cumberland Farms parking lot, drawing significant attention from passing vehicles and customers,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. โ€œHis dog escaped momentarily, prompting John to sit on a nearby stairway and shout, โ€˜Just arrest me!โ€™”

Officer Bisceglia said he then placed Matesowicz under arrest for Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Peace.

โ€œHe was handcuffed and transported to the station for booking,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. โ€œDuring the booking process, John continued being uncooperative and aggressive. Because of his behavior we were unable to take his fingerprints.โ€

Matesowiczโ€™s bail was set at $100.

โ€œJohn declined the opportunity to make a phone call,โ€ Officer Bisceglia said. โ€œHe was subsequently transported to the Franklin County House of Corrections by Officer [Timothy] Powling.โ€
