Lowell — The pedestrian struck by a car in a Friday night hit‑and‑run in Lowell remains on life support and “is not likely to survive,” prosecutors told the court on Monday .
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s Office announced that 30‑year‑old Christopher Campbell of Billerica faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, two counts of leaving the scene of personal injury, carjacking, larceny of a motor vehicle, negligent operation, and marked lanes violation, following multiple incidents that occurred on the evening of Friday, May 2, 2025, in Lowell.
At approximately 10:25 p.m. on May 2, Campbell allegedly crashed his Volkswagen Jetta into another vehicle in the area of Boylston and Rogers streets in Lowell. After the crash, Campbell reportedly exited the Jetta, jumped onto the other vehicle’s hood, and began shouting. The frightened driver fled, leaving the Jetta behind. Campbell then stole that vehicle.
A few minutes later, while driving on Rogers Street, police say Campbell drove the stolen vehicle onto the sidewalk and struck an adult male pedestrian, causing life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, according to NBC10 Boston.
Boston‑area state police then received reports just after 11 p.m. of a dark vehicle with no lights on traveling erratically and stopping in the left lane of Interstate 495 South in Franklin. A short time later, troopers received a report that the stolen Jetta had been struck by another vehicle while it was stopped in the left lane of I-495. Troopers responded to the scene and found the car abandoned in the roadway. During their investigation, troopers determined that the car had been stolen “from a location” in Lowell, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office reported.
State police troopers and Franklin police established a perimeter and found Campbell hiding in a culvert after he crossed I‑495. When confronted, he yelled that he had a gun. Franklin officers then tased Campbell, which allowed the joint law enforcement team to take him into custody without further incident.
At Campbell’s arraignment in Lowell District Court on Monday, May 5, an assistant prosecutor told the judge the pedestrian remains on life support and “is not likely to survive.” Campbell was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next Monday.
Is there any updates on the hearing and if they upped the charges to murder??
