Ashburnham to require permits and official trash bags for transfer station access starting July 1

ASHBURNHAM — Big changes are coming to the Ashburnham Transfer Station. Beginning July 1, 2025, residents will need a $75 annual permit and official Ashburnham trash bags to access the facility at 356 Winchendon Road, according to information shared by the Ashburnham Police Department and the Department of Public Works.

The new rules will replace the previous sticker-based system. Permits, trash bags, and bulk item stickers are available for purchase at the Town Hall Collector’s Office, or at the following local retailers: Ashburnham Hardware, Countryland Mini Mart, and Tweedo’s. Permits and trash bags cannot be purchased at the transfer station itself.

Permits are available online beginning June 3 and in person at Town Hall beginning June 16, 2025.

A permit costs $75 per year and must be displayed on the left inside of the vehicle’s windshield. Households may purchase an additional permit for $10. Approved town trash bags are sold in packs of five for $25, and bulk item stickers vary based on the item being disposed of. For instance, a television or computer monitor requires a $50 sticker, upholstered chairs and car seats are $20, sofas and recliners $45, while refrigerators or air conditioners containing Freon carry a $65 fee. Smaller items such as floor lamps and desk chairs require a $5 sticker. A complete list of accepted items and fees is available on the town’s website.

The transfer station will remain open on Saturdays only, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Recycling and yard waste disposal are included with the permit fee, but a valid permit or proof of purchase must be displayed to enter. Items such as construction debris, mattresses, propane tanks, and hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Public reaction to the changes was mixed. “Good way to get people to start dumping illegally,” commented Nate Kahahelis on the Ashburnham Police Department’s Facebook post.

Some questioned whether recycling would remain free. “Is recycling/yard waste still free or do you need a permit to drive in?” asked SJ Coppoli.

Others suggested eliminating the transfer station altogether. “The town should simply close the station, eliminate the person manning it, and everyone contract for their own service,” Rick Boucher wrote. Mark Andrew responded, “I wonder how many roads could be paved with the savings…”

For more information, including payment links and a full item fee list, residents can visit the Transfer Station page on the town’s website.
