No injuries were reported, but police emphasized that the explosion had the potential to seriously harm anyone nearby. The department added that tampering with mailboxes or any community exchange fixtures with explosive devices is a federal offense.

Oxford police are asking anyone with information or home surveillance footage in the area to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Burdett at jburdett@oxfordpd.us. Police stressed that even small details may help identify those responsible.

“The use of fireworks in this manner is dangerous, illegal, and highly irresponsible,” the department said in its statement, adding that Oxford police remain committed to protecting the safety and spirit of the community.
