WARE — On Sunday, June 1, 2025, at approximately 8:55 a.m., Officer Daniel Clark of the Ware Police Department was exiting the Ware Police Department’s driveway located at 22 North Street in a fully marked police vehicle when he observed a male and female standing at the crosswalk attempting to cross the street.

“The male party, who was later identified as [name redacted], was waving his arm toward the north side of North Street,” Officer Clark said. “As the two stepped back from the crosswalk to avoid being struck, I saw a red minivan go through the crosswalk at a very high rate of speed without stopping for the two pedestrians. I estimated the speed of the van to be between 50 mph and 55 mph.”
Officer Clark said the posted speed limit on North Street is 30 mph.
“It should also be noted that at this time on a Sunday morning there is heavy pedestrian traffic in this area as people are crossing the street to attend church which is located directly across from the Ware Police Department,” Officer Clark said. “I activated my blue emergency lights as I pulled out on to North Street to stop the vehicle, which was traveling south. The vehicle then turned abruptly onto Main Street heading west. At this time, based on the actions of the driver, I activated my police siren.”

Officer Clark said the vehicle then turned north into the entrance to Veterans Park on Main Street.
“The vehicle sped through the lot and then turned north back on to North Street,” Officer Clark said. “I was behind the vehicle the entire time with my blue lights and siren activated.”
At that point, Officer Clark radioed the vehicle’s registration number to dispatch and reported that it was failing to stop.
“As the vehicle turned back on to North Street, it came close to colliding with a vehicle that was also traveling north,” Officer Clark said. “The driver then passed this vehicle by crossing the double yellow solid lines in the road. The vehicle then continued north attempting to get away from me.”
Officer Clark stated that as they continued northbound, the red minivan sped past several other cars at a high rate of speed.
“The vehicle then turned east onto Convent Hill Road and then finally into a parking lot at the Hillside Village Apartment complex,” Officer Clark said. Later adding, “The operator of the vehicle, who was later identified as Jose Gonzalez, stopped the van and put his hands out the driver’s side window.”
According to police, Jose L. Gonzalez, 36, resides in an apartment at 17 Convent Hill Road in Ware, MA.
“I exited my cruiser and drew my department issued firearm from the holster and pointed it in the direction of Jose Gonzalez,” Officer Clark said. “I then ordered Gonzalez to step out of the vehicle and lay on the ground. He did follow my instruction without issue. After slowly making my way to Gonzalez, I put my firearm back in the holster and secured him in handcuffs behind his back.”
Sergeant Scott Lawrence and Officer Christopher Talbot arrived on scene a short time later.
“Gonzalez has his Mass I.D. of [# redacted] in his pocket,” Officer Clark recounted. “I called the ID number into dispatch. Dispatch then advised that Gonzalez has a suspended license status which I later confirmed.”
Gonzalez was charged with the following:
- Negligent Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Operating Motor Vehicle with License Suspended
- Fail Stop for Police
- Marked Lanes Violation
- Crosswalk Violation
- Speeding
Gonzalez was arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court on June 2, 2025.
Following his arraignment, he was released on personal recognizance.
His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 5, 2025.
