Dog helps woman escape alleged attacker in Rockland Town Forest

ROCKLAND — On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Rockland Police Department received a report from a female walker in distress after an alleged encounter with a man in the Rockland Town Forest, which is located on North Avenue by the Abington/Rockland town line and runs adjacent to Salem Street.

According to a statement from the Rockland Police Department, the woman was in the town forest walking her dog when she encountered a man who made inappropriate comments to her. As she attempted to walk away, he aggressively grabbed her arm.

“The dog lunged at the male party and the male then let go of the woman,” the Rockland Police Department said in its statement. “The woman was able to run out of the woods to her car.”

The male party is described as follows:

  • White male, medium build
  • Possibly in his 50s, with no facial hair
  • Dark, short, medium-length hair with some gray in it
  • Wearing a light-colored t-shirt, khaki shorts, and athletic sneakers
  • No visible scars, markings or tattoos
  • Did not have any distinct accent

Rockland police officers searched the wooded area and could not locate the man.

Anyone with information about the man, or with home surveillance footage showing someone matching his description in the area of North Avenue and Salem Street between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on July 23, 2025, is urged to contact the Rockland Police Department at (781) 871-3890 ext. 0.

The incident remains under investigation.
