WESTMINSTER — A small earthquake was recorded early Thursday morning just south of Westminster, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Earthquake Information Center.
The 1.4 magnitude quake occurred at 12:31 a.m. local time, about 6 kilometers south-southwest of Westminster. USGS data indicates the tremor originated at a depth of approximately 5.1 kilometers.

The agency’s “Did You Feel It?” system received two responses from residents in the area, and no damage or injuries were reported.
Even minor earthquakes are tracked closely by the USGS to monitor regional seismic activity. While Massachusetts is not typically known for frequent or strong earthquakes, small tremors occasionally occur across New England.
