Natick roofing business owner sentenced to jail for $1.6 million tax evasion scheme

BOSTON — A Natick man who runs a roofing business was sentenced to jail Tuesday for concealing $1.6 million in income from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts announced that Jake Miller, 42, of Natick, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy to one year and one day in prison, followed by one year of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $449,329 in restitution. In February 2025, Miller pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, Miller owned and operated Kostas Roofing, a commercial and residential roofing business, using the alias “Paul Kostas” instead of his real name.

“Between 2013 and 2021, Miller cashed the checks that he received from roofing customers and deposited the proceeds into his personal bank accounts,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts said in its statement. “Despite receiving at least $1.6 million from the roofing business during this period, Miller filed no income tax return for any of these years. As a result, Miller evaded income taxes of approximately $450,000.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Holcomb of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case.
